From Google to Chiang Mai: How One Layoff Sparked a Lifestyle (and Business) Redesign in Northern Thailand

When Shao Chun Chen lost his dream job at Google in early 2024, he didn’t just look for another role — he rewired his entire life.

The 39-year-old had built a high-flying career in Singapore’s tech sector, working 12–14 hour days and living in a $2,500/month condo. But the layoff forced a pause, and in that space, Chen made a radical decision: move to Chiang Mai, Thailand and start over with intention.

And it’s working.

Today, Chen and his wife live in a fully-furnished luxury condo in Chiang Mai for just $460/month. It has a gym, co-working space, pools, even a waterslide. He works for himself, earns through coaching, content, and investments — and pays less than a Singapore gym membership for rent, utilities, and Wi-Fi combined.

“I wanted to try something different… and I’ve always enjoyed Thailand,” Chen told CNBC Make It. “This was about experimenting with the life I actually wanted to live.”

What He Found in Chiang Mai

What Chen found wasn’t just a cheaper lifestyle. It was freedom from pressure, permission to breathe, and a space to grow.

He calls it “zero stress.”

The hustle culture that once consumed his life faded quickly in the slower rhythm of Chiang Mai.

  • No more paying for therapy, spa escapes, or weekend distractions
  • More time to build his brand and coach clients (sometimes at $500/hour)
  • A fivefold drop in rent
  • And — unexpectedly — less desire for the things he once used to cope with burnout

“My head space is completely different,” Chen said. “I actually save more money even though I don’t work as much.”

The Chiang Mai Shift: A New Entrepreneur Archetype

Chen isn’t alone. He’s part of a growing wave of remote professionals and founders moving to Chiang Mai not for retirement — but for reboot.

This isn’t backpacker culture 2.0.

This is business migration for people who want quality of life AND creativity.

In Chiang Mai, Chen:

  • Runs a coaching practice
  • Creates educational content on YouTube
  • Occasionally lectures at Singapore’s top university
  • Lives in what he calls a “financially independent, slow-living, high-agency” model

Chiang Mai: Not Just a Cheaper Life — a Smarter One

For entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and builders, Chiang Mai offers a powerful base:

  • Affordable cost of living
  • Peaceful surroundings
  • A supportive, international community
  • Strong remote infrastructure
  • Foreigner-friendly visa policies

“In Singapore, I valued everything based on efficiency and ROI,” Chen reflected. “But here, people just sit and enjoy their coffee. They read. They live.”

He hasn’t ruled out returning to Singapore one day. But for now, Chiang Mai offers something better than a new job: a new framework.
